HCG Intern Experience

Our Summer Internship Program

As college students explore future career paths, one way to gain experience is through an internship. This year, High Concrete Group offered young professionals opportunities to work with the engineering, project management, purchasing, and marketing teams. Six interns participated in the program at both the Denver, PA and Springboro, OH locations. Hillary Abordo, Nathan Tillberg, and Hayden Schultz spent the summer working with the engineering team in Denver. Emily Cowfer was a marketing intern in Denver. Jayden Elliott was a project management intern at the Springboro location, and Steven Emerson was a purchasing intern in Denver.

Interns had a variety of projects and tasks to work on, related to their departments’ area of focus. The company also coordinated a variety of events to supplement daily workplace tasks. These ranged from social events to training activities to in-the-field experiences.

Plant Tours

As a part of orientation, interns toured the architectural precast concrete plant located at the company headquarters in Denver, PA. Seeing the different stages of production provided foundational knowledge of how both the industry and High Concrete operate. The tour included viewing an assortment of completed panels, learning about the finishing processes used for each, and hearing about the background of the projects they would be used for. Interns also toured the cage fabrication, mold shop, and batch plant buildings. The tour offered insights into all of the steps that have to take place before a precast structure can begin construction.

Site Visits

As another way to experience the practical side of precast concrete, interns visited a site in progress at the expanding Eurofins | Lancaster Labs campus in Lancaster, PA. For the engineers, it was an opportunity to see a project translate from design to a nearly-finished structure. The visit included walking through all eight floors of the garage, evaluating cracks, and inspecting joinery quality. The interns were also able to watch several precast pieces arrive and be placed by the crane. The visit was an exciting way to see how precast concrete construction goes together on site.

Personal Development Training

Nearing the end of their internships, the interns participated in a half-day training. Following lunch, they completed a variety of activities related to understanding individual and team strengths. They toured the S. Dale High Leadership Center, meeting Chair Emeritus of High Companies, Dale High, and learning about the history of High Companies. The interns then learned about the growing StructureCare company, including its origins and connections to High Concrete. Former interns who now work full-time for High Concrete then shared their experiences at the company. The day ended with High Concrete President J. Seroky also sharing his experiences along with advice for approaching career opportunities.
