This project is an eleven story free-standing parking garage
comprising of 293,000 sf of precast/prestressed double tee floor
area. The parking garage
is located in a congested area next to a major trauma center and
the design had to take into account the subway which ran along one
elevation. Special
foundations were designed to transfer the lateral loads to interior
sections of the structure.
The exterior of the building is comprised of a light grey sandblasted
concrete with field set brick at the vertical stair and elevator
towers. Some elevations
of the garage incorporated a metal curtainwall cladding typical
of the adjacent medical center.
The precast concrete walls on the garage exterior utilized
a combination of textures.
The coordination with the local transit authority and the trauma center were essential in the success of the construction as the local streets and the “metro” system could not be closed during the construction period. Precast concrete provided a benefit in reducing the construction period substantially. The prestressed double tee shipments had to be carefully planned so as not to interrupt the critical entry point for the trauma center.
