This project is a part of Continental’s Global Gateway Expansion at Newark Airport in Newark, New Jersey. The 3,500 space garage is best described as a four story free-standing precast/prestressed parking garage comprising of 1,000,000 sf of elevated floor area and 360,000 sf of grade level slab area. The structure was built for Continental Airlines on behalf of the Port Authority of New York and New Jersey to support Continental Airlines which accounts for more than 60% of Newark Airport’s daily flight schedule.
The precast-prestressed parking structure involved more than 3,000 pieces of precast concrete, with more than 1,000,000 square feet of precast concrete tees and slab floor elements. The design required more than 300 unique connections, many being coordinated with long-span structural steel ‘box’ girders constructed on-site to span the HOV lanes in front of Terminal C.
The functional design of the new garage incorporates dedicated spaces for limousine parking, handicap spaces, approximately 1,000 short term ‘hourly’ car spaces and another 2,400 spaces dedicated to daily parking.
