2002 Best Parking Structure
River Street Garage
Harrisburg, PA
Architect's Comments:
"We were delighted to find that we could use precast as a skeletal frame, which allowed the parking facility to become an open and inviting arrival building.
- Frank Grauman, principal of Bohlin Cywinski Jackson Inc.
The Judges Said...
"This project was a unanimous choice of the jury due to its innovative use of big, horizontal precast pieces. It creates a nice balance between heavy elements and light elements while providing an open design. The architects devised a unique design that worked very well for this situation."

2001 Best High-Rise Correctional Facility

Federal Metropolitan Detention Center
Philadelphia, PA
Architect's Comments:
"Precast concrete offered a means of providing a lot of detailing in a relatively inexpensive manner," says Kevin Yoder, site architect and engineer for the architectural firm. "Yet, at the same time, it ensured we could provide the high security required in such a facility."
The Judges Said...
"This building does a marvelous job of dealing with a security institution while still providing interest, especially in the transition from the ground to the roof line. Even the lighting helps to break down the scale. It could have been more of a bunker than it is, and it deals with these challenges in a very elegant way. It uses the efficiency and affordability of precast to give texture and vitality to the faηade for the sake of the city around it."

2001 Best Industrial Facility
Bridgestone/Firestone Regional Distribution Facility
Upper Macungie, Lehigh Co., PA
Architect's Comments:
"Precast concrete insulated wall panels were selected for their durability, plant-manufactured quality, appearance and flexibility of design. With design help from the precaster, we were able to make the best of a load-bearing panel design, which eliminated perimeter structural-steel columns."
- Bob Kannapel, Project Manager at Cathers & Associates Inc.
The Judges' Comments:
"With it's elegant colors and sharply defined lines for a very clear geometry, this building reflects a pleasing variation and composition in the use of precast concrete. Using insulated panels is a judicious solution for an industrial building because they lend fast construction time, smart economy and thermal efficiency."
